Ukraine is “99.9%” sure Russia was behind a massive cyber attack against Ukrainian government websites on Friday, the president’s top security official has told Sky News.
Oleksiy Danilov, secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council, said: “We can clearly track their signature. These are the Russian specialists who perform these actions.”
Asked directly if he believed Russia was behind the attack, the top official said: “I am 99.9% sure.”
He said that the attack began at 2am local time on Friday and that only an hour later it was being reported by Russian media outlets.
The attack splashed a warning across government websites for the public to “be afraid and expect the worst”.
Russia has massed some 100,000 troops on Ukraine’s border.
A top cyber official told Sky News separately that the UK and the US were the first countries to contact Ukraine and offer assistance in responding to the cyber attack.
Lieutenant Colonel Yurii Shchyhol, chairman of the State Service of Special Communications and Information Protection of Ukraine, said that both countries were supporting Ukraine with their “knowledge and experience” in restoring the impacted systems.
