The dark web is a part of the internet that is not seen to search engines, and it is not accessible through normal browsers, you can access it using an anonymizing browser called Tor. 

The part of the web on the internet that is not indexed by search engines is called the Dark web. Undoubtedly you would have heard to talk of the dark web as a major platform for criminal activity–so it is.

In the year 2015, two researchers of King’s College Thomas Rid and Daniel Moore categorized 2,723 live dark web sites in which 57% hosted illicit material. 

As per the latest study conducted in the year 2019, into the web of profit, conducted by Dr. Michael McGuires at the university of the survey reveals that things have now become worse. The increased number of dark web listings can harm the enterprise by 20% since. The research also says that among all listings, 60% can potentially harm enterprises.

What can you do with the dark web?

The dark web is wide world undisclosed to the world where you can buy credit card numbers, all kind of drugs, guns, counterfeit money, hacked Netflix accounts and software that assists you get access of others PC.  The dark web also has a positive aspect, not everything on it is illegal. 

The common difference between the deep web and the dark web

Often people misunderstand “deep web” to the “dark web”, and sometimes they use both terms interchangeably. Anything on the internet that is not indexed by search engines, therefore others can’t access it on the same is called deep web. 

Dark web tools and services that present enterprise risk

Here is the list of categories of tools or services that can create a risk by means of a network breach or data compromise:

Infection or attacks like malware, botnets or DDoSAccess including remote access Trojans, exploits, and keyloggers
Refunds, credentials and fishing
Customer data
Operational data
Financial data
Intellectual property or trade secrets

Three other types of risks categorized in the report are:

  • Devalue enterprise by undermining the trust of the brand or damaging reputation 
  • Disrupting the enterprise through the malware of other attacks that affect business operations
  • Defrauding the enterprise including IP theft that can impair the ability of an organization or cause direct monetary loss
