NEW DELHI. With just one day to go to comply with the new norms for significant social media intermediaries, barring Koo, none of players including Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram have complied with the new regulations that require them to appoint a resident grievance officer, a chief compliance officer and a nodal contact person. The government had given the firms three months to fulfill the requirements with the deadline set to expire on May 26, 2021.

If these social media giants fail to comply with the new Information Technology Rules 2021 (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) notified by the government by Wednesday, they may lose their status and protections as intermediaries and criminal action can be taken against them as per the laws of India.
