I spend most of my time on my flagship smartphone, but with solid options available at less than half the cost of a high-end phone, it could be perfectly suited to your needs. I spent a few weeks on the TCL20SE for less than $ 200. This is an acceptable phone for communication purposes and anyone who needs a backup to get the job done.
The TCL 20SE is neither a gaming phone nor a phone that helps you easily take award-winning photos. As a TCL branded phone, it focuses on the display experience and basics. There is no 5G connection and an 18-24 month Android security patch is applied. It may be released quarterly. It’s also a very large phone with a 6.82 inch display and a 9.14 mm thickness.

That said, the price is only $ 189.99. Not many phones cost less than $ 200, and the TCL20SE seems to be well built with a pretty nice modern design. Having enjoyed messaging and Google TV movies on the big display, there is definitely a way to optimize the visual experience of the phone.

TCL has sent the Nuit Black color for testing. The back panel is made of plastic, but the light is bent to give it a luxurious design. There is a glossy solid strip on the far left, which moves you to the quad camera assembly. The back fingerprint sensor is centered on the top third of the back.
My first impression was that this was also a fairly large phone with a fairly thick 9.14mm. This is one of the biggest phones I’ve tested in the last few years and is probably designed to support a large 5000mAh battery.
The display occupies a generous part of the front, with a reported screen-to-body ratio of 90%. The front camera display has a cut central teardrop notch. Although the display is an LCD, it incorporates TCL’s NXTVISION technology and enjoyed streaming some movies during the evaluation period.
In addition to the large and vibrant display, it has two speakers so you can enjoy the movie sideways. The speakers aren’t going to set the standard for high quality speakers, but the sound was fun. There is also a standard 3.5mm audio port on the top of the phone.
The Google Assistant activation button is on the left, there is a SIM / microSD card tray, and the volume and power buttons are on the right. The USB-C port is on the bottom to charge a 5000mAh battery. The battery is easy to use for at least a day.
TCL 20SE launches on Android 11 and TCLUI version 3.x. An Android security update for April 5, 2021 is available on the review device.
The TCL UI provides a fairly stock Android experience with most of the TCL customizations in the launcher and settings focused on TCL’s display technology. I’m not a big fan of the default settings in the app launcher, which sorts apps by category, but you can switch to the more common name option with just two taps.
There are several apps that make it easier to use features on your phone, such as the gallery, FM radio, and NXTVISION utility. Some unique settings / utilities include an edge bar for quick launches of apps, access to useful rulers, and connection to contacts. There is also a fingerprint quick launch option so you can press and hold the underdisplay scanner to go directly to the selected app.
The Google feed is available as the leftmost home screen panel. All other expected Google Android features are also present on the phone.

Daily experience and conclusions
The TCL 20SE can be purchased from Amazon’s TCL store for $ 189.99. As long as you know what the limits are and identify the need for a basic smartphone, few phones are available for less than $ 200. This is a sure purchase.
Some important things that this phone lacks can be understood for less than $ 200, but Google Pay support NFC, dustproof or waterproof IP rating, high resolution or high refresh rate display, 5G, T-Mobile. There is no limited carrier support. And AT & T, and a good camera for sharing with social media.
The battery life is solid, the big display is easy to read, the phone sounds fine, the movies are fun to watch on the big screen, and the phone feels very good.
I took pictures with all TCL series 20 devices with Samsung and iPhone to check the quality, but the TCL 20 SE was clearly in the last position. However, the pictures are not terrible and you can take a decent picture with a pinch with stable hands and good lighting.
The TCL 20SE is not a gaming phone, and if you try racing games and other games with demanding graphics, performance will suffer. Puzzle games and other static games were fine. I’m so used to high refresh rate displays that returning to a 60Hz display is a bit painful for quickly scrolling up and down web pages and long lists.
The TCL 20SE is one of the best phones you can find today for less than $ 200. If you need a basic backup phone, or are looking for a large phone for older families for communication purposes, the TCL 20SE is for you.
