Position Summary:

University Information Services (UIS) provides
technical services and enterprise applications to the University of Colorado’s (CU) four campuses and the Office of the President. UIS is
committed to excellence in customer service, technical expertise, and the development of enterprise applications responsible for supporting
CU’s students, faculty, human resources employees, finance employees, and others.

The Systems Engineer is involved in the
planning, implementation, administration, and operational support of the University’s enterprise infrastructure. This includes daily issue
resolution, regular maintenance work, advisement, and contribution for project initiatives primarily within the infrastructure team. This
may also include participating in the definition, application, and support of best practices used by the team with a focus on continual
improvement.

The Systems Engineer reports to the Assistant Director of Enterprise Cloud Services (ECS) Infrastructure and is
exempt from the State of Colorado Classified Staff system.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

Primary
Responsibilities:

  • Participates in and/or leads activities responsible for the design, planning, configuration, installing,
    implementing, maintaining, documenting, troubleshooting, and upgrading infrastructure related services
  • Performs diagnostics and
    resolves and/or escalates complex problems to vendors as needed to address system, network, application, and customer problems
  • Collaborates with other teams within UIS and other CU campuses to carry out daily operations and complete projects and/or various
    initiatives
  • Researches, evaluates, and tests new technology solutions, best practices, and methodologies
  • Ensures
    infrastructure systems are secure, reliable, and performant throughout established lifecycles with best practices implementation, defined
    change management procedures, and meeting security policies and standards
  • Deploys and manages server operating systems, both
    physical and virtual
  • Configures, maintains, and supports network storage
  • Administers backup/restore services
  • Administers and supports access, distribution, and core network services to include firewall, load balancer, and wireless solutions
  • Utilizes configuration management and deployment tools, along with scripting/programming skills, to troubleshoot and automate work
  • Drafts and maintains documentation covering essential job functions and supported systems
  • Participates in required on-call
    rotations for after hours and weekend support

Knowledge,
Skills, and Abilities:

To be successful in this position, candidates will need the following:

  • Knowledge of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)/Windows operating systems, including systems performance tuning skills
  • Knowledge
    and understanding of layer 2/3 network, Fiber channel, storage area network (SAN), network attached storage (NAS), backup/restore
  • Knowledge of domain name system (DNS), Samba, network file system (NFS), transmission control protocol/internet protocol (TCP/IP),
    secure sockets layer (SSL), hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP)/HTTP secure (HTTPS), load balancing, simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP),
    network time protocol (NTP), and Active Directory
  • Knowledge of and skilled in the use of scripting languages (e.g. BASH, PYTHON,
    PowerShell, etc.)
  • High Availability, scalability, and security infrastructure design and implementation skills
  • Enterprise
    virtualization and container solutions skills
  • Oral, written, and listening communication skills, including the ability to
    accurately interpret with others are saying and convey messages, information, concepts, and details clearly
  • Business analytical
    skills, including the ability to understand the business of UIS and its customers in order to present, recommend, and implement technology
    solutions based on business needs
  • Ability to utilize Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.) and Visio for
    the management of tasks & documentation purposes
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex technical details and concepts to
    both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to interact positively, clearly, and professionally with customers, peers, and
    upper management
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to analyze data and trends in order to produce
    results
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a cross-functional team

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education in computer
    science, engineering or other related information technology field, or equivalent professional experience (professional experience may be
    substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis)
  • Four (4) years’ experience serving in a Systems Engineer
    capacity, or similar role, with any combination of experience in:

    • Planning, implementing and supporting Linux and/or Windows
      servers
    • Planning, implementing, and operating enterprise server virtualization and/or containerization platforms
    • Configuring and administering enterprise level next generation firewall and load balancer solutions
    • Building and supporting
      enterprise SAN environments
    • Utilizing one or more scripting languages (e.g. Bash, Python, PowerShell, etc.)
  • Participation in an afterhours and weekend on-call schedule for maintenance windows, change request work, and/or emergency
    situations
  • Local and regional travel around the Denver area to datacenters, remote branches, and CU campuses. Travel is required on
    an “as needed” basis, requiring this position to be based near Denver, CO.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Seven (7) years’ experience serving in a Systems Engineer capacity, or similar role as required above, with additional experience in:
    • Route/Switch/ networking; datacenter, core, and branch office
    • Setting up and operating backup/restore solutions
    • Configuring and utilizing system/network monitoring tools; alerts, log review, analysis, and remediation
    • Utilizing automation
      tools such as Puppet, Chef, Ansible, TerraForm, or related tools
    • Deploying, integrating with and/or supporting cloud infrastructure
      services (AWS, Azure, GCP)
  • Mid-level or above certifications in one or more of the previously mentioned areas of
    disciplines/expertise listed in the minimum and preferred qualifications

and a few smaller offices located on the campuses. However, this position is located at CU Systems, 1800 Grant St., Denver, CO. Many of our

Salary:

The salary has been established at a range of $90,000 to $95,000.
