Shentel email service interrupted by ransomware attack | Nvdaily | #malware | #ransomware

EDINBURG — Shentel email customers, including several Shenandoah County businesses, have been without access to their Shentel email accounts for several days due to a ransomware attack on the company’s third-party email provider, Mail2World.

The Edinburg-based Shentel put a message on its website over the weekend to let customers know about the attack, ensuring them that the issue is being worked on and that data is safe.

“The outage has been attributed to a ransomware attack, but as we understand it no customer data has been compromised,” the Shentel website message read. “Please know we are working diligently with Mail2World on restoring service as quickly as possible.”

An estimated time frame for when email services would be working again was not made available.

In messages to the Northern Virginia Daily, customers said their email service went down as early as Jan. 10.

Some of the county’s businesses operate with Shentel emails, accounting for purchase orders and vital communications.

In a brief statement on Twitter, which does not acknowledge a ransomware attack, Mail2World apologized to customers Friday evening for the outage and thanked customers for their understanding. No further public comment has been made by Mail2World.
