GRANITE FALLS — Medical records at a Granite Falls practice may have been compromised after a ransomware attack.

On Nov. 1, 2021, Granite Falls Family Medical Care Center was told by VPN Solutions, an administrator that maintains and secures the medical records of their patients, that on Oct. 31, 2021, an unauthorized third-party accessed their computer servers through a ransomware attack. VPN Solutions quickly stopped the attack; however, this was only after the third-party encrypted the medical records, making the records unavailable to Granite Falls.

VPN Solutions initially told Granite Falls that there was no evidence medical records were compromised or taken by the third-party. However, on December 20, 2021, VPN Solutions informed Granite Falls that although they are now restoring medical records, they cannot determine if the third-party accessed or acquired medical records. The information in the medical records may include medical history, testing, diagnosis, names, addresses or social security numbers. Although there is no evidence that any of this information was acquired or used improperly by the third-party, in an abundance of caution, Granite Falls is issuing this notice.

As a measure of good will, Granite Falls is offering 12 months of free credit monitoring to its patients. Granite Falls’ patients that wish to enroll in free credit monitoring can call 1-800-939-4170. Patients can also call this number if they have any questions.

Be vigilant by monitoring your financial statements, credit reportsPatients can order free copies of their credit reports through www.annualcreditreport.com. If patients see any suspicious activity, they should contact their local police department.

Fraud alertsPatients may also place a fraud alert on their credit file. Patients can call any one of the three major credit bureaus at the contact information below or place fraud alerts online at the websites below. As soon as one credit bureau confirms a fraud alert, the others are notified to place fraud alerts.

Place a security freeze on your accountIn addition to a fraud alert, patients may also have a security freeze placed on their credit file. A security freeze is free and will block a credit bureau from releasing information from a credit report without prior written authorization.
