Norway was struck by a wave of cyberattacks yesterday after Russia accused it of cutting off shipments of food and medicines to its citizens in the far northern Svalbard islands.

Several significant Norwegian websites, including the country’s electronic banking identification system and its largest newspaper, were taken down by what the security services described as a “criminal pro-Russian group”.

Emilie Enger Mehl, the justice minister, said: “Everything indicates that the attack came from a Russian and, I would say, criminal environment.”

Mehl, 28, added that several of the country’s public websites were struggling to maintain an online presence or had crashed after being subjected to massive attacks.

The hacking spree appeared to be an act of retaliation prompted by a dispute over the supply route
