Public safety officials are encouraging preparation and vigilance as tens of thousands of people are about to descend on Eugene and Oregon for the World Athletics Championships that starts Friday and runs through July 24.

“We’re hosting the world here,” said Andre Le Duc, chair of the public safety committee for Oregon22. “If you see something odd, use the channels you normally would to report it.”

The 10-day competition is expected to bring in more than 2,000 athletes, 3,000 members of the global news media and tens of thousands of fans, volunteers and organizers. Though the footprint will be slightly larger than previous events at Hayward Field due to the global media presence, security efforts from law enforcement and private contractors is expected to look similar to the Olympic Trials and the national championships held at Hayward Field in the past, Le Duc said.
