Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office Reminds Citizens to be Vigilant of Potential Holiday Scams | Idaho | #socialmedia

LEWISTON – With the holidays upon us, the Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public to be safe and aware during this time. Scammers will target and contact you about your Apple, Samsung, credit or bank account(s). Citizens are urged to use caution and avoid giving out Personal Identifiable Information such as your social security number, bank account information, address, etc.

Another method scammers will use is to send you a link to a fake page that looks exactly like the Facebook log in page, for instance. The victim will try to log in numerous times with no luck. Instead, what they have done is given a scammer access to their Facebook. This method is also used for other accounts and sites.

When shopping online, only purchase from secure websites. To check if a website is secure, you should see a “lock symbol” in the address bar on the computer, which lets you know the website access is secure. Make sure to check your accounts often and make sure everything looks right.

The Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office, nor any other law enforcement entity, will NEVER call you and tell you that you have warrant. Scammers that use that technique will tell you to pay it off via gift cards. Know that there are programs out there that let people clone phone numbers. So even if you receive a call from a number appearing to be a law enforcement agency, again they will never call and tell you that you have a warrant or ask you to pay off a warrant in gift cards or bank transfer.

The elderly are often preyed upon by these scammers. Please pass this notice and reminder along to anyone you know that may not have social media.

The Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season.
