Encounter underway between security forces, militants in Kulgam

An encounter is underway between security forces and militants in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said Wednesday evening. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Pombay area of Kulgam in south Kashmir on receiving specific inputs about the presence of militants there, a police official said.He said the search operation turned into an encounter after the militants fired upon the security forces party. The exchange of fire is still going on and further details are awaited, the official said.

Gold declines Rs 402; silver tumbles Rs 528

Gold in the national capital on Wednesday declined by Rs 402 to Rs 48,116 per 10 gram, according to HDFC Securities. In the previous trade, the precious metal had settled at Rs 48,518 per 10 gram. Silver also dipped Rs 528 to Rs 65,218 per kilogram from Rs 65,746 per kilogram in the previous trade. In the international market, gold trading higher at USD 1,857 per ounce and silver marginally up at USD 25.03 per ounce. “Gold prices traded firm with spot gold prices at COMEX were trading 0.37 per cent up at USD 1,857 per ounce on Wednesday,” according to HDFC Securities, Senior Analyst (Commodities), Tapan Patel.

Air pollution: Construction workers move SC seeking ex-gratia for daily wagers

A construction workers’ body has moved the Supreme Court seeking ex-gratia relief schemes for daily workers who will suffer loss of income due to sudden complete ban on the sector’s activities imposed by NCR states to curb pollution caused by dust. Blanket ban on construction activities, without identifying and excluding the ones which do not contribute towards air pollution is “irrational, arbitrary and whimsical”, said the petition filed by National Campaign Committee for Central Legislation on Construction Labour.
