Neopets recently became aware that customer data may have been stolen. We immediately launched an investigation assisted by a leading forensics firm. We are also engaging law enforcement and enhancing the protections for our systems and our user data. (1/3)

The data breach was announced by Neopets through a tweet, saying:
“Neopets recently became aware that customer data may have been stolen. We immediately launched an investigation assisted by a leading forensics firm. We are also engaging law enforcement and enhancing the protections for our systems and our user data. It appears that email addresses and passwords used to access Neopets accounts may have been affected. We strongly recommend that you change your Neopets password. If you use the same password on other websites, we recommend that you also change those passwords. As our investigation continues, we will update you as appropriate. We truly appreciate your patience and understanding at this time. Thank you.”
This is a live breach, by the way. Changing your password will do nothing pic.twitter.com/88fGpaJgOp

As the issue is a live breach, as pointed out by one of the users, so changing your password for Neopets changes nothing, as the hackers would still have data on your latest password. The safest course of action right now is to secure all other accounts and the email itself that was tied to your Neopets account. The issue will only be resolved once Neopets themselves are able to end the breach with better security for their web-based browser game, but the fact that the hackers gained access to the game’s source code would make that a harder task to follow.
Neopets is a long-running web-based browser game where players get to take care of and play games with. First launched in 1999, the game is now owned by Chinese gaming company NetDragon, which acquired edutainment developers JumpStart in 2017.
