A recent scam story from the 8 On Your Side investigative team generated a lot of response from viewers who say they have been targeted by the same scam.It’s called the fake check scam, and it’s been around for more than 20 years.This scam most often comes at you in the form of a mystery shopping scam.You get a letter congratulating you for being selected for your first mystery shopping assignment.But first, you must take the big check that comes with the letter and deposit it in your bank account.You’re instructed to go to various stores and use the deposited money to buy gift cards valued anywhere from $100 to $500.Then you’re asked to relay the codes on the back of the cards to the scammer.Once you send those pictures, the scammer takes the money on the cards.A few days later, your bank tells you that the check you deposited did not clear and you owe that money to the bank.This is just one version of the fake check scam, but it has several versions.The major warning sign is the large check. Once you see that, you know it’s a scam.
