A Maryland man running for a Senate seat completely made up a story about a bookstore where a young girl was forced to perform sex acts on customers, according to police.
Ryan Dark White, who is running as Dr. Jon McGreevey, has been charged with making a false statement after he reported child sex trafficking at an adult bookstore in Edgewood, according to the Harford County Sheriff’s Office.
An anonymous tipster called police on April 13 and reported that a girl between the age of 10 and 12 was being forced into sex acts with male customers, officials said Friday.
A formal report was not made but investigators dug into the allegation, including interviews with the young girl and the adult man who was allegedly running the crime ring.
Detectives eventually identified White, 54, as the caller and interviewed him on July 7, after which they confirmed that “at no time were any sex acts performed or offered by any of the individuals in the establishment.”
White was arrested Friday and charged with false statements to a law enforcement officer and false statement of the commission of a crime and existence of a condition imminently dangerous to public health and safety.

A spokesperson for his campaign did not immediately return a request for comment from the Daily News Sunday.
“It is shameful that a candidate for public office would make up such a story and use it to further his own political agenda” Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler said in a statement.
“It is even more appalling that another individual, who is running for a law enforcement position, would embrace such an obviously false narrative in an effort to gain political traction — nothing more… Fearmongering and antagonism caused wasted time and energy by our personnel, whose time would have been better served protecting the citizens of Harford County, instead of investigating lies.”
Gahler did not name the other candidate, but White has appeared in videos for Andy Kuhl, a Republican running unopposed in Tuesday’s primary for sheriff in Baltimore County.
“There has been a new system of child trafficking implemented when COVID began,” Kuhl’s campaign website reads next to a video with him and White. “It is now across 26+ States! Jon McGreevey and I go undercover to expose these sick and heinous crimes against children. We must bring these criminals to Justice.”
In another post, he claimed that White had been poisoned in retaliation for their work “to expose Child Trafficking happening in your backyard.”
Kuhl told The News Sunday that he believes the arrest is part of a “political smear campaign.”
