Kmart has excluded unvaccinated shoppers from New South Wales stores, and will look to do so in New Zealand if the Government requires it.

On Wednesday, Kmart chief executive John Gualtieri confirmed customers would need to prove they were fully vaccinated against Covid-19 to enter stores across New South Wales (NSW), as per Government requirements.

A Kmart spokesperson said it would only be able to implement vaccination restrictions in New Zealand stores if Government rules required them to.

“Following New South Wales Government requirements, all customers ar required to show proof of full vaccination status or a medical exemption,” she said.

“We will continue to follow government requirements in the states and countries we operate in.”

The New Zealand Government has only indicated it will impose vaccination restrictions on large-scale events and summer festivals.

Rules for retail outlets and hospitality businesses are yet to be finalised, but shoppers are currently required to wear a face mask and sign in using the NZ Covid Tracer app.

The spokesperson could not say if Kmart was requiring its New Zealand staff to be fully vaccinated.

After more than 100 days in lockdown, NSW retail stores, gyms, restaurants and cinemas were able to reopen for the vaccinated on Monday.

Businesses can only accommodate one person per four square metres and unvaccinated people are only able to access click and collect services and critical retail.

But footage posted to social media on Monday showed hundreds of shoppers lining up outside Kmart stores in Sydney’s west at midnight.

The line snaked 50 metres around the building, before shoppers bolted into the store minutes after lockdown was lifted.
