As per the report, these hackers were discussing “teaching a lesson to India”, specifically the Indian media houses. “When we started attributing the handles publishing these lists back to their sources we found that they belonged to two hacking groups, Gothic Panda and Stone Panda, two well known hacking groups with direct affiliation to PLA (People’s Liberation Army),” mentioned Kumar Ritesh, chairman, and CEO of Cyfirma. He further added that these hacking groups have a history of attacking government agencies and other companies in case of geopolitical conflict with China. Recently, India and China had a violent face-off, a biggest one in over five decades.

Cert-In recently released a warning stating that malicious actors were planning to launch a large-scale phishing attack campaign against Indian individuals and companies. The cyberattack planned to use malicious emails under the pretext of local authorities dispensing government funds for COVID-19.
