Not sure who to vote for in the provincial election on June 2? Vote for a candidate that understands Mississauga matters.
As the provincial election approaches, the City of Mississauga has launched an advocacy campaign to remind all provincial candidates and political parties that ‘Mississauga Matters.’
As Ontario’s third largest city, it is important that the next provincial government understands and supports Mississauga’s priorities to ensure continued recovery from the impacts of COVID-19, economic growth and investment to build a world-class city that is accessible and affordable for all.
“Ontario cities play a critical role in our province’s well-being. But the pressures we face continue to grow. As we head into a provincial election, it’s vital that the next provincial government will support cities in creating more housing that is affordable for everyone, help us in building key transit projects and sustainable infrastructure, and deliver financial support for our hardest-hit businesses and industries,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “The reality is that cities can’t do all of this alone. And as we continue to recover and build our growing city, we need a provincial partner who is fully committed to working with us. Our message to candidates is clear: our priorities should be your priorities because Mississauga Matters!”
The 2022 Mississauga Matters campaign asks residents to consider parties and candidates who will support:
- Housing Affordability: Work with municipalities to make housing more affordable so that people can live and work in Mississauga.
- Public Transit: Invest in building the Downtown Loop; provide all-day, two-way GO service along the Milton corridor.
- Funding for Cities: Extend the Safe Restart program to support ongoing recovery; sustainable funding to keep the City’s infrastructure in a state of good repair.
- Local Economy: Invest in businesses and industries hardest hit by the pandemic; support local business innovation and competitiveness.
Virtual Information Session – May 17
On May 17 at 1 p.m., the City will hold a live, virtual information session about Mississauga’s top priorities in the lead-up to the election. Provincial candidates in Mississauga ridings and residents are invited to join the session to learn about the City’s priorities and to ask questions of the panelists. Register online to attend the session and ask questions, or watch the livestream on the City’s website. Questions can also be emailed in advance to email@example.com.
“Mississauga is growing. Our City is known for its fiscal responsibility, but our limited revenue streams – primarily property taxes and user fees – do not adequately cover the costs to maintain services and accommodate growth,” said Paul Mitcham, City Manager and Chief Administrative Officer. “Mississauga needs a committed provincial partner to enable us to continue our recovery and build healthy, sustainable communities now and for the future.”
Mississauga Matters 2022 will run during the provincial election campaign throughout May and is intended to engage residents about the issues that matter to Mississauga.
Mitcham added, “We invite residents and business owners to attend our public information session with registered candidates in each of Mississauga’s six provincial ridings in advance of the June 2 election to share details and ensure they are keenly aware of our priorities and why Mississauga Matters!”
