Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana legend Steve Lekoelea has become the latest in a long list of targets whose phones have been hacked.
‘Chippa’ as Lekoelea is affectionately known has been left disgruntled, claiming that his phone has been hacked, from as far back as December 2021.
Talking to the Siya crew, Lekoelea claims that the hackers have been actively reaching out to some of his family, friends and industry colleagues asking for money with various stories.
One of the stories, according to Lekoelea is one that states that he has been arrested and is in urgent need of funds for bail.
“They are asking people for money, and they have been checking my Whatsapp and who I speak to so that they can ask money, telling people that ‘it’s me Steve, I’m at the police station, can you please e-wallet money,” a disgruntled Lekoelea said.
The 43-year-old says the hackers’ modus operandi is using text only, and when people try to reach them via phone call, they often reach a dead-end.
“They only use texts on Whatsapp, you can’t call them. I have to go to the police station and open a case,” he added.
Luckily for Lekoelea, the hackers haven’t managed to solicit funds from anyone in his circle, but has called on people to exercise caution when receiving dubious texts from people claiming to be him.
Other notable football figures who have fallen victim to hackers in recent times include George Maluleka, Themba Zwane, Joel Masutha, Kaitano Tembo and Thabo Mnyamane amongst others.
