Google Drive lets you seamlessly collaborate with others. It is also integrated with many other services and the files are always available. Better to get free storage space.

Despite the perfection of Google Drive, there may be problems accessing the service. You may not be able to free up storage space, share files, or access the document. Fortunately, many problems with Google Drive are easy to fix.

Here are some common Google Drive troubleshooting tips and then we will fix specific problems with Google Drive.

General steps for troubleshooting Google Drive

Here are some simple steps that you should try first. They can help diagnose and fix a variety of problems with Google Drive.

1. Check Google Drive status online

Visit the Google Apps Status Dashboard. All Google services are listed here and have known issues with them. If you see a “service outage” or “service outage” indicator in the application you want to use, you can click the colored dot to see details about when the service will be available again.

If the problem with Google Drive is Google, unfortunately the only thing you can do is wait for the problem to be resolved.

2. Disable antivirus and firewall.

Antivirus programs and firewalls are causing file synchronization problems or “Not connected, some features may not be available” error. So try temporarily disabling your antivirus and firewall, but don’t forget to re-enable them later.

For Windows 10, turn off Windows Defender by following these steps:

Press Windows key + I to open settings.

Go to Update & Security> Windows Security> Open Windows Security.

Click on Firewall and Network Security here.

Select the active network and slide Microsoft Defender Firewall to the off position.

If you are using Google Drive with a web browser, log out, close your web browser, make sure your internet connection is reliable, and log in again.

You can also disable Google Backup and Sync on the desktop by clicking the Backup & Sync icon, the Settings icon (three dots), and then clicking Finish Backup & Sync. Then reopen the app.

4. How to recover an old version of a file from Google Drive

Google Drive stores a detailed edit history of all changes made to the document by any user with edit rights.

To revert to the previous save of a file created in the Google ecosystem (such as Google Docs), go to File> Version History> View Version History (or press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + H).

The history of changes to the file will be displayed on the right side of the document and you can browse through all the edits you have made.

If you uploaded non-Google files, right-click the file, click Manage Versions, and you can browse and download all previous versions of the file (up to 30 days or 100 versions).

5. How to recover a lost file from Google Drive

If you are the only one with access to the file:

Check out the Google Drive Recycle Bin folder, which you can access on the left navigation bar via the Recycle Bin. If you see the file you are looking for, right-click and select Restore. Your file will now be available in the original location.

If the missing file is not in the Recycle Bin, it may have been renamed or accidentally moved to another file. Fortunately, Google Drive search has been improved. Try searching for the file using keywords or dates to see if it is in a different location than you expected.

If multiple people are working on the file:

One of the most common problems with Google Drive is that it deletes the file for everyone if one person deletes the shared file. There are many things to consider when collaborating with Google Drive, but it is one of the most important. As with any other file storage system, it is essential that backup copies of files are stored in a separate secure location.

The owner of the shared file can recover it from the deleted files. Or, if you have a Google Drive account at school or work, your administrator can see all deleted files for 30 days after they were deleted and can help you with your case.

6. Google Drive has run out of storage space

Google Drive storage is shared between services like Google Docs, Google Spreadsheets, and Gmail and Google Photos. To find out how much space you are using on all these Google services, visit the Google One Store page. If you run out of space, you have several options.

The first is to clean up files that you no longer need. Click Storage in the menu on the left of Google Drive. All the files that you can sort by the storage you are using will be displayed.

To delete something, right-click and select Delete. Don’t forget to take it out of the trash too.

Google Drive management apps

You should also check if there are any third party apps that are using the repository invisibly. To do this, click the gear icon in the upper right corner and click Settings> Manage applications.

For each program, click Options and, if necessary, you can use Remove Hidden Program Data. You can also click Disconnect from Drive to completely uninstall the program.

Update your Google One storage

Google Drive has 15GB of storage space, which you can use quickly if you’re not careful. If you can’t find something to remove, consider paying to increase your storage capacity.

You can find pricing on the Google One storage page, where you can pay a reasonable monthly or yearly fee for 100GB, 200GB, or 2TB of data.

7. Could not print to Google Drive.

Printers and Google Drive sometimes don’t work together, but you have several options to try to fix the problem:

Make sure your printer software is up to date. Because Google Drive is constantly being updated, you can quickly bypass the printer software. This can cause communication problems between the two services and printing errors.

You will also want to make sure that the web browser you are using is up to date.

Disable browser extensions that may be interfering with printing.

If you still can’t print directly from Google Drive, you may want to take the time to download the PDF and print from the PDF software instead of the browser.

8. I cannot view or edit the shared Google Drive file.

This problem is often caused by the many options users have for sharing Google Drive files with others. The person sending you the link to the file may have skipped the process or selected the wrong option. As a result, you may not be able to see the file at all, or you may not be able to make any changes to it.

If you don’t have access to the file, Google Drive will ask you to request access to the owner of the file and will ask you to change your file sharing settings.

If you are the owner of the file and people are having a hard time accessing it, check that you have set up sharing correctly with the video above.

9. How to use Google Drive offline

To use Google Drive offline, you will need to use the Google Chrome browser or install the Google Drive application on a Mac or PC.

Visit Google Drive settings and select Create, open and edit the latest Google documents, spreadsheets and slideshows on this device when offline. You will need to download the Google Doc Offline plugin, which will ask you to do so.

You can only do this with one account per computer, so enable it only on the account you use most often. Also, to enable offline syncing, you will need to have an internet connection first, so you need to plan ahead for the first time.

Download Google Backup and Sync and follow the instructions to set up your account. You will first need to connect to the Internet to sync your files with your computer.

10. Can’t upload or sync files

One of the key benefits of using Google Drive is that it syncs files between devices. If it breaks, it is a big problem.
