A special garda unit that deals with economic crime has had 80 websites taken down so far this year that have attempted to defraud people.

The Garda National Economic Crime Bureau (GNECB) conducted inquiries on websites suspected of being involved in fraud. In the first three months of 2021 they successfully suspended 80 websites that were being used to target Irish residents.

Heather Humphreys, the acting justice minister, confirmed the figures in response to a parliamentary question about phishing, the cybercrime in which emails, calls or text messages from someone posing as a legitimate institution try to lure individuals into providing sensitive data such as personally identifiable information, banking and credit card details and passwords.
