FARGO — The FBI’s Fargo office is warning of an increase in business-related internet scams in the Fargo area.

“Business email compromise” scams target both businesses and individuals in order to transfer funds out of their accounts, according to the FBI. The scam often occurs when a legitimate email address is compromised after a user clicks a malicious attachment or link in a spam or phishing email.

The FBI offered the following tips to protect from similar scams:

  • Be careful with what information you share online or on social media.
  • Don’t click on anything in an unsolicited email or text message asking you to update or verify account information.
  • Carefully examine the email address, URL and spelling used in any correspondence.
  • Never open an email attachment from someone you don’t know and be wary of email attachments forwarded to you.
  • Set up two-factor authentication on any account that allows it, and never disable it.
  • Verify payment and purchase requests in person if possible or by calling the person to make sure it is legitimate.
