Concerns over Howth Junction as DART expansion is outlined | #macos | #macsecurity

Concerns over security, disability access and lack of staffing at Howth Junction DART station have been raised by Sinn Fein Dublin City Councillor Mícheál Mac Donncha.

Cllr Mac Donncha said that while the planned expansion of DART services on the Northside is welcome, there is ‘widespread public opposition’ to the idea of a shuttle DART service between Howth and Howth Junction.

Speaking following the Dublin City Council North Central Area Committee meeting which heard a presentation from Iarnród Éireann, Cllr Mac Donncha said:

“The planned DART upgrade on the Northside with increased capacity and frequency is very welcome.

“This will involve extensive work on stations and new rolling stock which is on the way.

“While this progress will be welcome, there is widespread public opposition to the idea of a shuttle service between Howth and Howth Junction, replacing the current direct service to the city and beyond. People using Howth, Sutton and Bayside stations are very concerned at this.

“Irish Rail has told us that, if introduced, a shuttle would only operate at peak times.

“They state it would be necessary to ensure increased frequency on the northern line.

“Nonetheless the issues this raises are serious, with people especially concerned about the changeover at Howth Junction.

“I welcome the commitment given by the representatives of Irish Rail to address the problems at Howth Junction station as part of the expansion.

“These include security concerns, lack of adequate shelter and seating and disabled access.

“Above all, with millions being spent on DART expansion, this must include staffing on the station.

“It is set to become much busier and we need Irish Rail staff on site.

“Irish Rail also needs to renovate the derelict Signalman’s House at Howth Junction, a fine old building that has been sadly neglected.

“It could be renovated and handed over for community use.”
