Charlotte man warns of Venmo cell phone scam after losing $2,200 :: WRAL.com | #phishing | #scams

— Posts on the Nextdoor app are warning people of a scam making its way around Charlotte.

According to WCNC Charlotte, a person walks up to you, says they need help and asks to use your cell phone to call a friend or family member. Then they use your Venmo account to send themselves thousands of dollars.

It happened to Trevor Hartley as he tried to help a man in his own front yard.

He ended up offering him his own cellphone but thought it was odd when the man started texting on his phone. Minutes later, the man handed Hartley’s phone back and ran. The scam cost Harley $2,200.

To protect yourself, experts say go to your security settings in the Venmo app and make sure the ‘Face ID and Pin’ option is turned on.
