The carrier-locked variants of Samsung‘s Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Z Fold 3 smartphones have started receiving the April 2022 Android security patch in the US. Their unlocked counterparts have already picked up the new security update.
As of this writing, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is picking up the April SMR (Security Maintenance Release) on Sprint and T-Mobile networks. The new firmware version for the 2020 foldable smartphone is F916USQS2GVC8. Users on other networks can also expect to receive this update soon.
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is also currently receiving the April security update on T-Mobile’s network. But it shouldn’t be long before the new software package reaches other networks. The updated firmware version for the latest Samsung foldable is F926USQS1CVCC.
The latest update for the foldable duo doesn’t bring anything more than the security fixes for this month. Samsung has already published the content for the April SMR. According to the company, the new security patch contains fixes for over 80 vulnerabilities. The most notable of those is the Dirty Pipe vulnerability that allowed a remote attacker to gain system-level access to your phone. This could give the attacker full control over your phone.
The Dirty Pipe vulnerability only affected Samsung’s Galaxy S22 series flagships and select models from other brands. But the April SMR also patches several other critical vulnerabilities, including a few with remote code execution capabilities. So whether you are using the Galaxy Z Fold 2 or the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the latest update is quite an important one.
Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Fold 3 in the US get the April security update
Samsung began rolling out the April security patch to its Android smartphones in the last week of March. The Galaxy S22 series received the update first. Dozens of other models have followed since. The international versions of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Z Fold 3, as well as the unlocked variants in the US, have also received the new SMR over the past few weeks. Their carrier-locked variants are now joining the party too.
If you’re using a carrier-locked Galaxy Z Fold 2 or Galaxy Z Fold 3 in the US, you should receive the April update anytime now if you haven’t already received it. Watch out for a notification about the OTA (over the air) rollout in the coming days. You can also manually check for the update though. Simply navigate to Settings > Software update and tap on Download and install to see if an OTA update is pending download. If there’s no update available, check back again later.
