Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre is set to premiere in early 2022 and stars Jason Statham as Orson Fortune, a contractor who worked with Sarah Fidel (Aubrey Plaza) to stop a dangerous transaction. In spy-thriller movies, usually, the protagonist handles the majority of the work in disguise to make a clean getaway.
In the action movie Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, Orson suggests hiring a Hollywood star, Danny Francesco (Josh Hartnett) to assist in the mission. Before viewers have a chance to see this unlikely team in an undercover mission, there are few Statham movies worth seeing that are equally thrilling and in some cases, funny.
‘Wrath of Man’ (2021)
Patrick “H” Hill (Statham) was hired at Fortico Security to transport money in an armored vehicle in Wrath of Man.. During the move, thieves attacked the truck. However, Hill handled the situation with ease. After the attacks were more frequent, Hill’s colleagues grew suspicious of who Hill was and what his intentions were.
Wrath of Man might seem almost similar to Statham’s previous The Transporter films, except it wasn’t as easy to distinguish if the Statham’s character wasn’t working with the criminals undercover. The suspense and mysteries keeps viewers hooked as they also try to figure out Hill’s background.
‘Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw’ (2019)
Fast and Furious: Hobbs & Shaw focused on two of the characters from the Fast and Furious franchise, Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Statham). They were first enemies after Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and Hobbs severely injured Shaw’s brother, Owen (Luke Evans) in Fast 6. Shaw and Toretto’s team formed an alliance after realizing that they have a common enemy.
In Fast and Furious: Hobbs & Shaw, Shaw was a former M6 agent and British Special Forces soldier, and his sister Hattie (Vanessa Kirby) was Brixton’s (Idris Elba) target after she stole a virus capable of wiping out the entire human population. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw was considered a stand-alone film and in the chronological order of the Fast and Furious films, it possibly followed The Fate of the Furious movie.
In Spy (2015), Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) thought that when she joined the CIA, she would be out in the field and clashing against the most wanted criminals. Instead, she worked behind a desk as the person behind-the-scenes, where she helped CIA agents navigate the correct route to flee from the dangerous area.
Spy leaned more on the side of comedy than a thriller. In Spy, Statham’s character, Rick Ford, exaggerated his outrageous MacGyver skill set with lines such as “jumping out of a high-rise building using only a raincoat as a parachute.” Whereas for McCarthy, it proved to be one of her best performances in a comedy so far.
In Parker (2013), Parker’s (Statham) joined a five-person crew to commit a heist. While they left the heist unscathed, one of the members of the crew, Melander (Michael Chiklis) told Parker that for their next heist, he won’t be awarded for his job. When Parker refused to agree to those terms, and requested for his payment, he is left shot on the side of the road.
Parker wanted to outsmart Melander, and retrieve his far share of the job. He traveled to Florida to scout out the property that Melander owned. While visiting the house, Parker met real-estate agent Leslie Rogers (Jennifer Lopez) who wanted to assist Parker in his new executing plan for Melander. This was not the only thriller that Lopez appeared in, she also starred in the 2022 Netflix thriller The Mother.
In Homefront (2013), Phil Broker (Statham) and his daughter Maddy (Izabela Vidovic) moved out to Louisiana, the same town that Maddy’s deceased mother was from. When a boy started to bully Maddy at school, she defended herself against him in a fight at school. The school called the boy’s parents to explain what happened. The boy’s parents wanted to settle the issue with Broker and demanded an apology.
Phil retired from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and wanted to raise his daughter in a safe environment. However, the boy’s mother, Cassie Bodine (Kate Bosworth) wasn’t going to let go of the schoolyard fight, and asked her brother, Morgan ‘Gator’ Bodine (James Franco), to scare the Broker family.
In Safe (2012), Mei (Catherine Chan) was wanted by several groups, the Chinese Triads, the Russian Mafia, and corrupt police officers. She happened to know the combination of unlocking a safe carrying $30 million dollars. As she kept fleeing her captors in a subway station, Luke Wright (Statham) stepped in to help her.
Luke was previously an NYC detective and a fighter. His family was murdered after he accidentally killed his opponent in the ring. When he learned Mei’s memorization gift, he vowed to protect her and insisted that he will learn the combination to the vault to keep Mei safe.
‘The Mechanic’ (2011)
The Mechanic was a nickname given to Arthur Bishop (Statham). Bishop specialized in assassinating targets but orchestrating the scene to appear as if the target was accidentally killed (such as car explosions or drowning). The skilled hit-man was offered one last job before he could retire, and that is to kill Harry (Donald Sutherland) his former mentor.
Bishop killed Harry and posed the cause as the effects of a carjacking. At Harry’s funeral, Bishop met Steve McKenna (Ben Foster), Harry’s son, who was determined to avenge his father’s death. Bishop decided to take Steve under his wing and train him to be the next “Mechanic.”
‘The Bank Job’ (2008)
The Bank Job might be considered an underrated heist movie worth seeing. In The Bank Job, Terry Leather (Statham) moved on from criminal acts but had trouble garnering enough money from his car dealership. Martine Love (Saffron Burrows) suggested that Terry should join her team in robbing safety deposit boxes in London, but money wasn’t the only item they were stealing.
Their hatched plan had many uncalculated mishaps. For instance, the conversations transmitted on walkie-talkies between the robbers was released to the public. However, there were more incriminating secrets that were uncovered. The Bank Job was based on a true story of the 1971 Lloyds bank robbery in London.
‘The Italian Job’ (2003)
In The Italian Job, the nerve-wracking adventure began after the heist. Steve (Edward Norton), a crew member from Charlie Croker (Mark Wahlberg) and John Bridger (Sutherland), double-crossed them and held the team at gunpoint. After Steve thought he shot all the members, he escaped with the $35 million dollars.
Handsome Rob (Statham) was the getaway driver for Croker’s team, and he was able to navigate the busy streets of Los Angeles quickly and effectively. Lyle (Seth Green) handled computer hacking and Left Ear (Yasiin Bey) handled the explosive equipment. After Steve’s betrayal, Croker recruited Stella (Charlize Theron) to join the team.
‘The Transporter’ (2002)
“Don’t open the package,” was one of the rules Frank Martin (Statham) had to abide by in The Transporter. His job was to transport packages from clients, the requirement was that he didn’t question what was in the packages, didn’t open the package, and didn’t back out or alter the deal once he accepted it. Despite always complying with the rules, he broke one of the rules when he opened the trunk of his car to find a woman tied up.
The client found out about Martin’s broken promise, whereas Martin learned that the woman, Lai (Shu Qi), wasn’t the only woman transported. Besides the 2015 movie The Transporter Refueled, Statham starred in The Transporter (2002), The Transporter 2 (2005), and The Transporter 3 (2008). Transporter 2 and Transporter 3 followed different transporting missions that Martin was hired to fulfill.
